Piggotts Poultry Breeders are committed to supplying hens and day-old chicks free from male chick culling.

 

Every year in the UK, millions of male chicks are destroyed after hatching. This is because cockerels don’t lay eggs and cockerels of egg laying breeds gain less meat than typical broiler races. However, thanks to new scientific developments, this no longer needs to be the case.

 

Piggotts Poultry Breeders are proud to be the first and only poultry supplier in the UK to offer laying hens where no males are destroyed at day old. On 4th April 2022 Piggotts Poultry purchased 6000 “Respeggt” day-old chicks.

The Respeggt technology allows the hatchery to test hatching eggs at just 9 days of incubation, meaning that only female eggs continue to hatch. This completely eliminates the requisite to destroy male day-old chicks.
